Other Things We Found

Let me introduce myself. My name is Peter Gray and I smoked 30 cigarettes a day for nearly twenty years.

Now I don't. And that was because I won this fight many years ago.

Dead CigarettesAfter my moment of truth - when I was forced to accept that I was an addict, not a free man - I knew that this fight was the most important fight of my life. It took me eighteen months to kill the desire to smoke. And that is the key. Smoking is, above all, an emotional problem, a habit, not so much an addiction.

The method I used to become a free man again was almost identical to this. I say almost because what took me a year and a half could have taken much less. Weeks or even days.

There is no drama or special supplements in this method. No 'will of iron' is necessary. And above all there is
no fear. (One of the biggest problems for most of us is our fear of change.)

It is a guide to your enemy. I suggest that you look into this.

Teenagers who smoke a pack of cigarettes each day are five times more likely to suffer from a generalized anxiety disorder and/or agoraphobia, concludes a study by researchers from Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

They were also 12 times more likely to have a panic disorder during early adulthood.

The researchers say that their data indicate that smoking itself leads to the anxious states, not that the
individuals sought relief from anxiety by smoking. The study examined 976 randomly sampled families in
upstate New York.

"When I stepped into the shower that morning with a cigarette dangling from my mouth, determined to
actually smoke that cigarette between the streams of water, I knew it was time to quit smoking. There I
stood, naked and foolish, intimidated by a habit that moved me to try to mix fire and water. An overwhelming
sense of defeat filled my heart. I stood there quietly for a few minutes, watching the water bounce off the
cigarette, saturating it until finally it started to sag. How terrifying that a simple thing like a white, cylindrical
tube could drive me to such childish behavior. It was appropriate that I hit bottom naked, since that was
exactly how I felt, naked and alone except for the destructive habit beckoning my call. I felt humiliated, then
angry. It was time to fight!"

As well as the addiction to nicotine, there are many other things that make you smoke. Most of these other
things are people, events, situations and emotions. Life itself, in other words.

For example, you smoke when you wake up, on your way to work, before sex, after sex, when you pick up
the phone, when you're going to meet someone new, with your tea or coffee, to relax with another smoker -
it's more sociable, when you finish your meal, when you feel amazing, when you feel terrible. when you feel
happy, when you feel sad, when you argue with your partner, when you are stressed, to relax, while you have
a beer, before you go on a flight, when you meet your partner´s parents for the first time. And so on, and so
on. For the rest of your life.

- I can smoke if I want to.

- Okay. Can you NOT smoke if you want to do that?

There’s a couple more things you need to know -

First, the tobacco companies are into genetic engineering. The idea is to create tobacco plants with much
more nicotine.

Second – according to the BBC – tobacco companies have developed and patented 57 ways to make
cigarettes safer – but are refusing to use the technology.

Before the First World War, lung cancer was such a rare disease that most doctors never saw it in their lives.

The big problem with tobacco is that it takes 20 to 40 years to destroy you – its victim. Most people have a
problem with imagining the end of the month, much less twenty years.
