Why We Started

Let me introduce myself. My name is Peter Gray and I smoked 30 cigarettes a day for nearly twenty years.

Now I don't. And that was because I won this fight many years ago.

Dead CigarettesAfter my moment of truth - when I was forced to accept that I was an addict, not a free man - I knew that this fight was the most important fight of my life. It took me eighteen months to kill the desire to smoke. And that is the key. Smoking is, above all, an emotional problem, a habit, not so much an addiction.

The method I used to become a free man again was almost identical to this. I say almost because what took me a year and a half could have taken much less. Weeks or even days.

There is no drama or special supplements in this method. No 'will of iron' is necessary. And above all there is
no fear. (One of the biggest problems for most of us is our fear of change.)

It is a guide to your enemy. I suggest that you look into this.

Why We Started

Why do we start smoking?

To be cool, of course.

Young people see images of heroes who smoke, or drink or even take drugs. And these images have greater
impact on their behaviour than anything others may say to them.(A study in California has found that there are now about 11 depictions of smoking in every hour of the typical film. And studies in different countries show a correlation between the amount of smoking imagery in films and the likelihood of young teenagers starting to smoke.)

Parents often set a good example by not smoking and forbidding smoking in the home. But this can be
trumped by the glamor of smoking in the movies.

The images of Hollywood stars and musicians smoking have had an influence on people's decisions to start
smoking.

There are other reasons people start smoking, but more often than not, it is because of the image that is
created in their minds through the use of clever advertising campaigns. In some parts of the world smoking is viewed as an initiation. *You’re a man, now, sonny*  In fact, most people get started smoking with their first cigarettes given to them by older friends or family members.

"The cool girls who are showing cool to the cool boys*Girls smoking together

A writer in a forum says, "I gave up when I was 16 and for some reason started again when I was 17.  People
who start smoking are usually CHILDREN."

And another, "We know many people who start out being "social smokers," who are people who smoke
cigarettes just at parties while drinking a whisky. As the drug becomes addictive, we also know many people
who have progressed from social smokers to chain smokers.  Part of the reason they smoke is to be a part
of the crowd that they admire."

We choked and we spluttered. We felt sick. And the taste was foul. But, hey, that’s cool.

*But, best of all, adults don’t want us to smoke*

Now that is really, really cool.

*So all your propaganda – what a joke! Let’s collect cigarette packs. I’ll swap you two lung cancers for one
impotence. Cool! How about one heart attack for two high blood pressures? Also cool*

No child consciously makes the choice; 'right, I'm going to be a smoker for life now'.

*We’re rebels. We don’t have to obey your stupid laws*

Many chidren start smoking as an act of rebellion towards their parents or teachers. It is not necessarily a
result of a poor upbringing - it is just a way of striking out, growing up and becoming independent. Of course
there are better ways but when you're young you just don’t know that.

*Weekends. Best time of the week. The only time of the week that counts. Looking for the cool boys, looking
for the cool girls. You can’t stop me smoking. I’ll do what I want. I’m cool*

Its often a question of looking older, looking cool or fashionable. We all want to look our best and at times in
our life smoking may seem a way to achieve this.

*These are our places, our fashions, our music. Your messages about smoking, about anything are just not
cool*

Not cool at all.

An English writer has this to say, "Most of us start smoking when we're young because we think it looks cool
and grown up. Well, we really are grown up now and the first thing you realize when you're grown up is,
smoking is blooming childish."

So yet another generation of fools is born………
